Bertram
Walter Dumbleton
was born 1896 in South Africa at George in the Cape
Province. He studied at the Academic Julian in Paris and
Regent Street Polytechnic in London.
Bertram Dumbleton was one of a number of artists chosen to
represent South Africa at the British Empire Exhibition at
Wembley London, in 1924. He lived intermittently in England,
Paris and Cape Town between 1925 and 1937. He exhibited at
the Royal Academy in London.
When in South Africa, Bertram
Dumbleton was a regular participating artist at the annual
South African Society of Artists’ exhibition (SASA), where
the South African
National Gallery purchased a number of is works. From 1941 to 1946, he lectured at the
University of Cape Towns Michaelis School of Fine Art. It
was during this time ‘FRANSCH HOEK’ was painted.
He again lectured at Michaelis School
in Cape Town from 1948 and in 1952, was represented at the
Van Riebeeck Tercentenary Exhibition. Bertram Dumbleton died
in Cape Town in 1966.
