Southern African Artist

Feast - LB mNcube or LR Mncube - 1978

We are unable to identify the artist of this pencil drawing. This and another below were discovered together in the UK. The auctioneer labelled them: 'from the South African school’. This example is unframed on paper, measuring 30 centimetres x 43 centimetres.

The name Mncube is of Matabele origin. The composition is indeed Southern African. Barbel catfish prefer slow running water, so the water mass is likely a river. The river may indeed be the Zambezi, as the Matabele were at times present there. Other clues are the outdoor cooking apparatus - both Southern African in form.

Boy with a Donkey

Boy with a Donkey - LB mNcube or LR Mncube - 1978

This artwork depicts a young man and his donkey transporting a bag of maize through bleak terrain. The desolate landscape concurs with suggestion the artist lived in Zimbabwe, as 1978 was the height of the Rhodesian War. The lad walks with a carved snake stick, again confirming both works are Southern African.

This example is also unframed on paper. It measures 27 centimetres x 41 centimetres. Notice the Logo on the bag included an image of an open piece of corn / maize and the word MEAL in English.
