David Phaswane Mogano was born in Pietersburg South Africa in 1932. He received his education at Mogano Higher Primary School in Pietersburg. He arrived in Johannesburg during the early 1950’s, where he began work as a cook in a hotel.

In 1959, David Mogano trained under Sydney Kumalo and Cecil Skotnes at the Polly Street Art Centre. An ingenious ability to draw, together with a unique personal presentation of perspective, led to exclusive works in watercolour, a technique easily mastered. Detailed graphic depictions of people, their physical environments and social criticisms, allowed an injection of humour through his integration of African tradition and Western modes dress and dwellings.
