A political work by Sonja Zytkow

Zoot Suited Bothas of a Feather  - Sonja Zytkow - 1981

An anti-Apartheid blast from the past! Ceramist Sonja Zytkow exhibited Zoot Suited Bothas of a Feather at a solo exhibition at 'Things Gallery' in 1981. The works were later published in “LIP from Southern African Women" (1983). At the time of the exhibition, three Bothas ruled the South African Nationalist Government and coincidentally, the French movie La Cage aux Follies (Birds of a Feather) was all the rage. Sonja's presentation was a satirical political message to people to lighten up, as everything was banned left right and centre. Even a government official dressed in a flashy suit of extreme cut would have been VERBOTEN. Roxanne Botha, State President PW Botha's daughter, visited the exhibition and apparently left in tears. She later appeared in a documentary called 'Children of Apartheid'.

The three works are offered at a trio.  They measure 33 centimetres x 43 centimetres each.

Sonja Zytkow

Sonja studied fine arts, filmmaking and sculpture in the UK before obtaining her master's degree in ceramics at Berkeley in California. Her hands fly through the air as she talks about structures, spaces and pieces. Her talent and endless creative energies have been all over the place throughout life. She puts foot in a different country or continent every few weeks. To relax, she designs jewellery in her spare time.
