About the Authors
For almost half a century
Werner Fischer
travelled to the African continent. "We lived with and among the natives and
so we gained an in-depth insight into their tribal life – not only learning
their ways and traditions but understanding them," the 87 year-old
remembers. "Only by living under same conditions as those in the remotest of
areas we did gain the native’s trust and confidence, whilst otherwise
Europeans were regarded with utmost suspicion."
Manfred A. Zirngibl
has devoted more than 50 years to the study of African weapons. His
autodidact expertise acquired through readings, museum visits, travels and
excellent contacts with scientists, Africanist and collectors throughout the
world make him a recognized authority.
Afrikanische Waffen is an
essential book for anyone serious about African weapons. It provides the
reader with a better understanding of the African artisan’s metal working
skill and attempts to correct the widely held, ignorant belief that the
natives are a backward and primitive people. It discusses
the materials used, techniques applied and finishing touches of the African
blacksmith. Wooden artefacts, drawings and early taken photographs are
included to enhance the visual display.
