Her African Quest

Barbara Tyrrell -
Her African Quest
In ‘Her African Quest’,
Barbara Tyrrell shares with us journeys though southern Africa in search
of the traditional dress of many different ethnic peoples inhabiting
this region.
Her flowing, lyrical and often philosophical style of writing takes the
reader from Natal to the Eastern Cape and as far as Namibia and Zambia.
Although drawing and painting traditional dress was her purpose, it was
inevitable that she would learn of the remarkable customs, traditions
and spiritual beliefs of the tribal people she met. These she learnt to
respect and honor; custom and traditions more all-encompassing than
people not familiar with them could possibly comprehend.

She looks at the effect of traditional values and customs of the
different tribes on their lives then and their inevitable erosion in the
evolving society of the Rainbow people of today.
In relating her in-depth experiences of a long quest in search of the
unique and intricately patterned costumes and traditions of the great
variety of ethnic people of southern Africa, this important and timely
book shares with us the historical background of many of the different
peoples populating this land, which can only lead to better
understanding, respect and communication between all.
