Nessa Leibhammer

This is a resource catalogue for the Southern African Collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, providing a guide to the exhibitions SECULAR AND SPIRITUAL and OBJECTS OF MEDIATION / VIEWS FROM WITHIN. It tells a story of early Black South African artists and gives a unique account of pioneer black artists born in the 19th and early 20th Century. Its aim is to explore urban art created by early black artists in South Africa.

The 50 page catalogue is generously dispersed with images of wonderful, important and quality objects. Regrettably - the catalogue includes an image depicting one of many fake figures Mark Valentine had commissioned. The Johannesburg Art Gallery was not the only public or private institution to have been deceived by the man. Once his fraud was exposed, curators for the most part stood by and did nothing, 'other than cover for their own poor judgment of his character and their lack of knowledge regarding such objects'.

Price: $40.00 plus postage.
