South African Tribal Life Today was published in 1984. Ben Levitas authored the text and Jean Morris mastered the photography. The book offers a historical account into  many of South Africa's native cultures.

It describes tribal customs including dress, ornamentation and beadwork. Sections on Huts and Homesteads - Food and Eating Habits - Economy - Relationships - Religion, Beliefs and Magic - Ceremonies and festivals are brilliantly illustrated, as is Political Power, Order and Justice.

Ben Levitas was born in Johannesburg. He was a graduate of the Universities of Pretoria, Jerusalem and London. He studied the migrant labour system while working for the Chamber of Mines. He travelled extensively around the world including Southern Africa.

Jean Morris, born and educated in England, went on to spend the most of her life in Southern Africa. She drove nearly 50000 kilometres over 13 months to record what was left of the colourful traditional way of life of Southern Africans. Her photographs of Southern Africa, its wildlife and tribal peoples, have been published in five books.

At the time of publication, more than half the people of South Africa were affected by tribal values and customs. South African Tribal Life Today, looked at vanishing aspects of tribal life that were still practiced.
