Michael Graham-Stewart - Michael Stevenson

1850- 1910  From Adornment to Artefact to Art

This book is an elaborate sales catalogue devoted to gaining wealth from the sale of a collection of beadwork with origins of south and south east Africa. It claims to illustrate 260 pieces of beadwork dating from 1850 to 1910. A minor player behind the book made assertions that the entire collection was sold to the Africa Bank, which it was not.

The book contains 192 pages and is as new. Beadwork is presented as an art form, rather than artifact. There are 19th century field images, maps, reproductions of paintings, as well as chromolithographs lifted from Industrie des Cafres du Sud-Est de l'Afrique - Snelleman and Muller 1891-92.

Much of the collection was produced by Zulu speaking women in the Zulu kingdom and Colony of Natal. There is material from Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.  Flying in the face of the books title, items produced by Sotho women, as well as Xhosa speaking women from the Cape are included.
