South East African Beadwork

1850- 1910  From Adornment to Artefact to Art

This book is an elaborate sales catalogue devoted to gaining wealth from the sale of a collection of beadwork that has origins to south and south east Africa. It claims to illustrate 260 pieces of beadwork dating from 1850 to 1910. Though assertions were made that the collection was sold to the Africa Bank, it was not.

The book contains 192 pages and is as new. Beadwork is presented as an art form, rather than an artifact. There are 19th century field images, maps, reproductions of paintings, as well as chromolithographs lifted from Industrie des Cafres du Sud-Est de l'Afrique - Snelleman and Muller 1891-92.

Much of the collection was produced by Zulu speaking women in the Zulu kingdom and Colony of Natal. There is material from Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.  In contradiction to the books title, items produced by Sotho women, as well as Xhosa-speaking women from the Cape are included.

Price: $65.00 plus postage.
