Suspicion is my Name - Barbara Tyrrell - Page 96

'Suspicion is my Name' by Barbara Tyrrell gives a full account of Bhaca traditions, complied over decades of study in Richmond, KwaZulu Natal. Barbara Tyrrell grew up and spent an important part of her life in Richmond, an area populated by Zulu speaking 'Bhaca'. She wrote 'Suspicion is My Name' in the voice of a young Bhaca woman named Suspicion.

'Suspicion is My Name' describes the customs and beliefs of the Baca people. As with all Tyrrell works, meticulously detailed watercolours provide an in-depth unique record of Bhaca dress.

Nobody alive today, Bhaca included, knows more about vanished Bhaca customs than Barbara because as 99 in 2011, she has outlived Bhaca tradition!

This book was published in 1971 by her lifelong friend Tom Bulpin. It has 191 pages detailing minute aspects of Bhaca customs and beliefs. Barbara Tyrrell captured and exposed what others could not 'see' in over 20 colour plates, many originally sketched in line drawings dating to 1940.

'Suspicion is my Name' includes a wealth of ink drawings (74) with accompanying text. Above, one of sixteen full-page drawings that provide encyclopaedia knowledge into the meanings behind Bhaca dress, a 'dress code' that changed continuously throughout a person's life. These invaluable records are priceless and yet another tribute to Barbara Tyrrell's exceptional work and fulfilling life.
