Tracing the Rainbow - Art and Life in Southern Africa  (Spuren des Regenbogens - Kunst und Leben im südlichen Afrika) is about just that. Visually - it is a profusely illustrated art book that includes 480 pictures, mostly in colour. It is also a book about life in South Africa. On the back is written:  There is much to discover in Southern Africa. Where for a long time a simplistic black-and-white approach barred deeper understanding, now the multifarious and fascinating diversity of men and cultures and their histories and artistic developments become ever more apparent.

The book includes a collection of highly varied essays by knowledgeable 'experts' on Africa. Topics range from early-collected tribal art, contemporary art, historical and political topics, to questions of artistic production as well as ways to deal with nature and culture in the face of globalization and industrialization. An overall picture of a vigorously dynamic Southern Africa is presented.

Great objects are found throughout, but the misattribution of the same runs rampant. The cause for this may well have been a lack of knowledge by various contributors. First prize for 'way off" goes to a Turkana ostrich egg apron labeled as San (Page 58). Second, to an Ila 'or related' headed axe labeled Zulu (Pages 380-381). This aside, the book is a MUST HAVE for any serous Southern African tribal art collector interested in viewing authentic items.
