Joan Broster's easy style tells a fascinating story of
the vanishing world of the old Transkei. In this her fifth book, renowned
author Joan Broster fulfilled her dream of recording many of the lives and
adventures of the Transkei pioneers. Liberally interspersed with
photographs, it is a mix of research and reminiscence, from the early
missionaries to the demise of the traders.

Throughout her life Joan's great love of the Transkei
motivated her to place on record as much as possible, the way of life of the
indigenous inhabitants of the beautiful land. She wrote four books on the
tribal peoples.

Joan spent the latter part of her life researching the
contents of this book. She approached her subject from a different but
equally important perspective. Although it has been meticulously researched,
it was never Joan's intention to create a concise historical record. Rather,
she embraced a very warm and intimate account of the pioneers and people who
over time, changed the character of the Transkei.

Sadly, Joan passed away before final publication, but
she was able to see and indeed sign the first printed draft of the book. She
ends off her foreword saying: Time
spins a veil over lost years and the past is obscured. The early generations
have vanished. We do not live only for the Present; we honour the Past and
the historical continuity of human lives. Hail and Farewell - Joan
