Tribal Peoples of Southern Africa

Barbara Tyrrell - T. V. Bulpin

Barbara Tyrrell's Tribal Peoples became the bible of Southern African beaded tribal costume. She captured 24 vanishing Southern African tribes tribal traditions with detailed colorful paintings and illustrations including the Bhaca, Bushman (Kung), Cele, Herero, Hlubi, Fengu, Karanga, Leya, Lovedu, Lozi, Ndebele, Ngwane, Ovambo, Pedi, Pondo, Shangane, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga, Tonga Venda, Xesibe, Xhosa and  Zulu

. The drawings and watercolors were recorded during the 1940s through the 1960s and the book first published in 1974.

Barbara Tyrrell's meticulous accounts provide a rare and accurate record of dress and appearance among these peoples during the mid 20th century. She discusses the migrations, traditions, customs and above all, the strange and intricately patterned costumes of the tribal peoples of Southern Africa.

Barbara dedicated Tribal Peoples to her son Peter and to Killie Campbell saying;  because this book is inextricably hers as well as mine. Killie Campbell was her close friend, sponsor and a driving force behind Her African Quest. Click either link to visit the "Campbell's Zulu Rickshaws or Barbara Tyrrell's account of her life travels in Southern Africa.

Barbara Tyrrell's work will always rank as the standard book on the subject. It is in a large format featuring 96 fantastic color plates, 76 line drawings and 256 pages of text. Our first edition copy was published in 1974 and is signed by the author.
