Barbara Tyrrell's Tribal
Peoples became the bible of Southern African beaded tribal costume. She captured
24 vanishing Southern African tribes tribal traditions with
detailed colorful paintings and illustrations including the Bhaca,
Bushman (Kung), Cele, Herero, Hlubi, Fengu, Karanga, Leya, Lovedu, Lozi,
Ndebele, Ngwane, Ovambo, Pedi, Pondo, Shangane, Sotho, Swazi, Tsonga,
Tonga Venda, Xesibe, Xhosa and Zulu
. The drawings and
watercolors were recorded during the 1940s through the 1960s and the
book first published in 1974.

Barbara Tyrrell's
meticulous accounts provide a rare and accurate record of dress and
appearance among these peoples during the mid 20th century. She discusses the
migrations, traditions, customs and above all, the strange and
intricately patterned costumes of the tribal peoples of Southern Africa.
