Voice-Overs - Wits Writings Exploring African Artworks

Standard Bank African Art Collection, University of the Witwatersrand Art Gallery

Tito Zungu  - Go my Paper

Voice-Overs is an exhibition catalogue. Items chosen from the Standard Bank Collection of African Art at the University of the Witwatersrand Art Galleries are discussed. Curators of the travelling exhibition were Julia Charlton, Karel Nel, Anitra Nettleton and Fiona Rankin-Smith.

The Voice Overs exhibition comprised approximately 120 items. Highlight were Jackson Hlungwane's Gabriel from The Altar of God, as well as a superb Chokwe figurative maternity staff from Angola.

Wooden neck rests (one fake - another misattributed), as well as a charming Xhosa related pipe in the form of a Victorian boot and African beadwork, are celebrated in the catalogue.

Artefacts were chosen by 54 members from the anthropology, applied English language studies, archaeology, architecture, art history, drama, fine art, history, international relations and visual literacy departments. Each selector contributed text about their choice and the texts take the form of poems, short stories, artworks and narrative writing - as well as traditional research.

"Puzzle of he Past" by Marilee Wood achieves highest praise.

Price: $80.00 plus postage.
