Southern
Angolan Headdresses
Photographs of outlandish Angolan headdresses worn by the Donguena, Hakawama, Himba,
Humbe,
Kuvale, Mbukushu,
Mukubal,
Mwila,
Ndimba,
Ngambwe, Ovambo and Zemba people of Southern Angola follow.
Elaborate
headdresses are the reason Africans used headrests. Neck rests supported a
persons necks, head or cheeks when
sleeping.
Surprisingly, many of the field images which follow were taken as recently as August 2006.
Collector - photographer Neil Munro has been kind enough to share them with
us.

Headdresses from southern Angola are
for the most part, not constructed in a manner allowing
for easy removal. More often then not they are assembled piece by piece into a persons hair.
Some examples which are removable in collections follow. Click the
thumbnails for higher resolution pictures.
