Chisaluke - Circa 1990 - © Gallery Ezakwantu

Chisaluke represents a male protector or guardian spirit. He accompanies an initiate through the mukanda in full costume.

Chisaluke masks are normally made from a solid construction of woven branches, then covered with bark cloth or fabric, hornet wax and cloth or paper strips. This mask however has of a rare carved wooden form.

Wooden Chisaluke masks are mentioned in literature, but rarely collected. Little doubt, this is an exceptional example and one of few authentic specimens known.
